I’d like to introduce to my followers a studio crafting shakuhachi or Japanese
bamboo flutes in Kyoto or elsewhere. I choose this place because it represents
Japanese culture in two unique ways. First, the craftsmen put so much time and
effort into selecting out the right material. Since each bamboo has its own diameter
and curves, they work hardest to find out the best material possible, imagining how it
will finally sound as an instrument. In no other instrument is the natural qualities of
the material so important. Second, the studio is now striving to overcome the serious
effects of COVID-19 through cloud-funding. In fact, many Japanese are so aware of
the importance of this traditional instrument that they all readily express their
support. I myself have rarely heard of similar cases in any other country, so I’m sure
my world viewers would be impressed by this good will of the people.

I would choose the past, going back to the last days of the Edo Period. Japan is in
an utter chaos, and I would see people coping with the situation differently. Some are
totally at a loss what to do in a period when everything seemed to change drastically.
But others are brave enough to face the coming difficulties. I would definitely want to
belong to the latter, contributing as much as possible to moving Japan forward. This
is because I’m an optimist, believing in this country’s great flexibility and potential.
As for life, most people would of course live in a humble manner with far fewer things
around them. But their simple life would also be rich in that they could have far more
time to think deeply of themselves, their friends and relatives and, above all, what they
can do for their country’s bright future.

I’d like to revise the criminal law in a way that enables authorities to punish far
more strictly those who utter irresponsible remarks or spread fake news on social
media. Many such changes are now being intensely discussed, and if I’m correct, some
of them have already been put into force. But I can hardly say it is enough, because
social media is still flooded with too many offensive words and sheer lies. In fact, I
myself is among those victims, and am yet to fully recover from the hurt one such harsh
comment inflicted on me. In my view, any sincere debate comes only after some
celebrity commits suicide, drawing acute attention from the public. That is much too
late. I therefore do hope that the law could be much tightened at the earliest possible
timing, so our society can be free of any such concern.

I’d introduce an English teacher from my cram school, because his classes are so
unique. Surprisingly, there is no textbook for his classes. Instead, we are given every
time a discussion theme simple yet never easy to answer, like “If you had a child, what
would you want him or her most?” Of course, we are supposed to answer primarily in
English, but if we cannot, we may state our opinions in Japanese, always followed by
him saying, “Speaking English is important, but more important is expressing yourself.”
I really appreciate his stance. Another merit of his classes is that all members are from
different grades and schools. So, even on a very familiar topic, like school festival, we
can hear a variety of interesting episodes. Thanks to his classes, I now very much like
the subject of English, and more importantly, communication itself.

I’d like to major in economics because it is economy that forms the very foundation
of society. In other words, it is economic activities that move our society forward.
But I’ve felt something is wrong with this driving force. In Japan, everything seems to
stay put, and I’ve wondered why. This simple question has motivated me to clear it up.
To analyze how goods and services are produced, distributed and used, what is required
most is the ability to deal with data. Fortunately, I’ve always been excellent at math,
and teachers have suggested that I make the most of it. I’m particularly interested in
how local economy works, and I have long thought the Seto Inland Sea and its
surrounding areas have huge tourism potentials. To me, Okayama is ideally located
to closely examine those abundant, untapped tourist resources.
