Based on this graph showing the average hours worked a year from 2019 to 2020,
people in India worked the longest among all eight countries, followed by three other
Asian countries, while three European countries all worked shortest, with Japan lying
in between. I don’t think working long hours is a good thing, because the number of
working hours can no longer measure the achievement of any work. It is rather
productivity that counts today, as the same task can be processed much faster by
employing artificial intelligence or any other latest technology. Moreover, longer work
means a shorter private life. No matter how much I may earn from work, I couldn’t
ever call such a life fulfilling.

This graph shows ten items Americans are generally afraid of, by the order of their
percentage points. The most feared three are “Public speaking,” followed by “Heights,”
and “Insects, snakes, & other animals,” all surpassing 20%, whereas the least three are
“Ghosts,” followed by “Darkness,” and “Zombies,” all going down 10%. I am quite
surprised at this result, because roughly one in four Americans is afraid of public
speaking. This goes against my stereotype of a typical American. To me, Americans
are sociable, friendly, and rather fond of speaking in public. Also interestingly,
Americans are as much afraid of heights, even though they are building so many
skyscrapers while launching space shuttles one after another.

The graph shows a relatively similar distribution for “Speaking loudly on phones”
and “Talking about others,” although the latter shows less variation across the groups.
Meanwhile, “Eating while walking” shows the largest difference, nearly twice as wide
as that of “Smoking.” Interestingly, older people find the former more annoying while
the latter follows a reverse trend.
Personally, I find smoking the most annoying habit because it negatively affects
not only our health but also the health of others. It is well known that smoking and
secondhand smoke alike can cause cancer. Additionally, the younger people are, the
more annoyed they tend to feel about smoking. Based on this, we can safely say that
society was more tolerant of smokers in the past.

問
The bar graph shows the average annual working hours in five countries: Japan, the USA, India, Germany, and Brazil. Write an essay in about 120 words describing the graph and expressing your opinion about long working hours.
解答
This graph shows the average annual working hours in five countries.
According to the data, the most hardworking country is India with about 2200 hours, followed by Brazil and the USA.
On the other hand, Germany shows the least hours, and Japan lies between the USA and Germany.
It is also interesting that Asian countries tend to work longer, while European countries work shorter hours.
I was surprised at this result, because I had thought Japan worked the longest.
To me, Japanese people are usually known as hard workers, so I did not expect India to surpass them.
Moreover, the difference between Germany and India is striking, showing a huge contrast in work styles.
Personally, I think working long hours is not always good, because it does not guarantee higher productivity.
Additionally, longer hours reduce private time, which may harm our health and happiness.
Based on this, we can safely say that work-life balance is more important than the number of hours.
Therefore, I believe such graphs are useful to understand global differences in work culture.
